Welcome to patio life! It’s where some might sit-back outdoors, dine on the Ave, or lounge at the beachside bar. That’s what summertime brings us as “school’s out, cookout’s in!” Maybe you’re heading off to your vacay getaway for some R&R and to refresh the batteries. Meanwhile, America just celebrated its 250^th birthday but there’s mixed feelings as to what that’s gonna all mean.

In this month’s edition we loop in the annual summer kickoff of the Roots picnic as Jay-Z makes an appearance in our Celebrity Row column. We also feature two new families, one in the Lead Story and the other for the ‘Tap-in the Afterglow’ column which celebrates their daughter as a PsyD graduate. There was a sad story from the south about the disappearance of Nolan Wells who went missing after partying with friends and was later found dead. Many are mad that this stuff keeps happening in America. Elsewhere, we saw hip-hop get put in the spotlight as a hot topic on what’s best for the culture. In this season of America’s next chapter, these stories are reminders of how we still need to ‘level-up America’.

Celebrity Row: Here for the Culture – “A Clash Between the Culture and The Cultured”

It was another chance to celebrate music hits and dance moves at the annual BET Awards. As expected, the pre-show scene was on and fashionable where stars of all stripes showed up for the fun. At these events, fans and onlookers love watching the entry parade for who’s with who, and who’s wearing who. As they say, after the pre-show is the party, and after the party comes the afterparty.

On another front, Flood Magazine covered the surprise performance by Jay-Z at the annual Roots picnic. He was in freestyle form with a new look there and at his Yankee Stadium 3-night blowout concert. Fans raved on social media as there were moments folks were rocking and popping. With all the special guests, maybe he’s looking to level-up hip-hop for its next chapter, just like we need to level-up America.

A ‘crowd favorite’ moment at the awards was the tribute to Lauryn Hill and her journey from the early days of hip hop. Sometime after the show there was some rumbling on what ‘the culture’ represents. Is it based solely on arts & entertainment, or also other aspects of black life? Things got interesting when India Arie shared a comment on aspects of today’s music and message, which became a hot topic.

We’ve had these moments before that are like a clash between the culture and ‘the cultured’. It’s often when old-school gets new competition with new-school artists in sound and style. Nothing wrong with being creative or pushing the envelope. But even Jay realized from looking back on his track ‘Big Pimpin’… don’t allow the music to sell your soul since all that glitters isn’t gold.

Lead Story: “A Reminder of How History Was Made”

Something happened on the recent Juneteenth that made history. Former U.S. President Barack Obama invited some family, friends and guests for the official opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center. It took many years in the making, almost as a reminder of the eight years he served as president over two terms in office. Now he’s proud the center will remind us of how history was made.

As opening approached, some key community partners and media officials got a sneak peek of the center ahead of things. Among them was long-time colleague and friend Shawn Dove, who visited with his wife Desere for many reasons of reflection. He was part of a select group that President Obama enlisted when brainstorming the My Brother’s Keeper initiative. Shawn prob had flashbacks from the tour.

One reason for his involvement was as Founder/CEO of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. You might remember the press conference president Obama had to address the shooting of Travon Martin and how he saw himself in Martin. Similarly, Shawn’s background and backstory hit in a similar way. He decided to spearhead that campaign not simply as a job but as a larger calling.

Recently he took some time off to do what he described as ‘pruning and cocooning’. Maybe he was also drawing on inspiration from his favorite team, the NY Knicks, in stepping up his impact game. His life’s work has deep connections with his life’s walk. When he isn’t speaking to the hearts and minds of black males or other wider audiences, he’s hanging with his fam at the ‘Dove Nest.’

Tap-in the Afterglow: Friends and Family Who’re Good to Go!”

My daughter Kai, now lovingly known as Dr. Kai, graduated with her PsyD in Psychology from Kean University, and the whole village showed up. Spouse, parents, siblings, stepparents, friends, and extended family were all there to celebrate her. But more than that, we were there to honor the journey.  We saw the struggle, the anxiety, the laughter, the fears, the frustration, and the wins.

At the end of it all she ‘landed’ the plane. As she walked across that stage and was hooded, it felt like we all walked with her. That weekend we also celebrate her husband, our beloved son-in-law, Jon, who received his Master’s as a Nurse Practitioner from Yale University, his second master’s degree. A powerhouse couple, indeed. What a moment for them and for us as a fam.

Recently had the chance to think about how it took 27 years to see the Knicks back in the NBA Finals. As fans, we lived through losing seasons, rebuilding years, coaching changes, injuries, heartbreak, and endless jokes from fans of other teams. And now there they are. Her graduation and the Knicks championship run are reminders that sometimes the biggest victories come after the longest waits. Don’t quit on what matters to you.

Don’t quit on your goals. Don’t quit on your dreams. Don’t quit on yourself. Sometimes success takes longer than expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s not coming. In this season of my life, I’m celebrating more than basketball, I’m celebrating perseverance. We give thanks to the Most High for giving them faith, strength, and perseverance. Good Stuff: “Will the Real History Stand Up?”

The Ten Million Names Project and the American Ancestors team in Boston took a deep dive in history as a lead-up to America’s 250^th Independence Day celebration. Without giving too much away, ABCs Good Morning America tracked down a living descendant of a slave that helped build the White House. The documentary is called American Story: The Hands That Built the White House.  

While it’s not ‘good stuff’ that free labor of the enslaved built the White House, the story ironically involved someone named…John Freeman. It’s like what we saw in the World Cup. The first goal scored by the U.S. in the tournament happened on Juneteenth by Alex Freeman. It’s as if our ancestors wanted us to know that they’re still watching over the affairs of a nation that wants to erase some aspects of history.

Ever had a conversation with a friend, then after it was done you thought, “Wish we had taped that?” Well, that’s how this came about with Yasmine, who’s from one of our founding families. Just before she headed off to Togo Africa for the next edition of the “Dream Africa Cultural Exchange”, she mentioned some of what was planned. Then the idea took shape to record the convo.

We made two takes, one where she was being asked questions about Dream Africa. Then the second time she was asking questions about my book ‘Public Good Sense.’ Just like that we were showing mutual support and doing reverse marketing. Life & Times Flava (Chill Sauce for the Grind): “Chip on Your Shoulder”

World Cup Soccer matches have been exciting to watch! So much to be inspired by, from the human-interest stories to last-minute scoring. Of course, there was some drama with the U.S. team when Folarin Balogun was suspended for a red card penalty, even after VAR (video assist replay). He was re-instated to play the next game, but the U.S. still lost. It’s as if Belgium showed up with a chip on their shoulder.

While that was playing out, the competition rolled on. Beyond having VAR to help get the calls right, we learned that the soccer balls have a chip inside. This technology helps with confirming if a player was offside, since the chip gives real-time data on where a player was before the pass was made. It’s amazing that we have this ‘smarts’ for sports, but with issues of our time we get lost in the sauce.

Maybe we need a different kind of chip on our shoulders. Not one based on bluster and pushing our weight around, but more like a brightening in our mindset and attitude on things across family and country. Some might remember the song ‘total eclipse of the heart’ which tells the story of love that feels so good but falls apart so fast because ‘light’ gets blocks. That’s some of what’s happening in America.

We need a chip in the heart that will give us real-time data on our emotions during moments of drama and controversy in the social space. America just celebrated its 250^th birthday and some folks wondered why in some ways it felt more like a funeral than a festive occasion. Well, like a mountain climber, we should consider that a milestone isn’t just a celebration but also a re-calibration for the next level.

Parents finalize plans for a family trip or signing-up for a fun event after dark. The graduation celebrations and summer season kinda go together, like my new book ‘Public Good Sense’ is with Independence Day events (more below). Also, this is the 2^nd anniversary of The Family Line portal.  

It’s a good time to feature new families, one from the South, the other from the Northeast. In the Lead Story, Keith Henry allowed us to include the graduation message he shared at his alma mater. There’s a winning spirit that’s spreading by the NY Knicks in the NBA playoffs. They’ve been on a roll, winning in four game sweeps since the second round. Celebrity Row: Here for the Culture – “What’s Black Got to Do With It!”

There’ve been a few news stories of late about pro athletes coming out of retirement. The most notable ones recently have been U.S. track & field sprinter Allyson Felix and premier tennis player Serena Williams. But for Naomi Osaka, sometimes she feels like stepping away (more on that in a second).

Felix says she’s back with an eye on making the 2028 US Olympic team in the mixed 4X400 event. Williams is looking to slowly work her way back on the court, by first signing up to play in a doubles match. Meanwhile, word on the street is that future stars are working their way up the charts too, like 18-year-old tennis player Alyssa James who’s now ranked in the top 50 (see her backstory here https://www.threads.com/@plantbasedeatyourveggies/post/DZADdW9ESnj?xmt=AQG0IflKOvwFLwOWvqtNEnn-6XKFLiM4rHKx-ksqPjwGMg).

But back to Osaka who recently hosted a party at the French Open among friends in the sport. Of course, the haters got going on bashing her for hosting a ‘black party’ as those in attendance were her close friends. Instead, Osaka clapped back and basically said, what’s black got to do with it! She added that since she’s half black and half Japanese, she’s proud of celebrating her background and with her culture.

After the first few years of her pro career, she took some time off to reassess her life roles and career goals. Upon returning after that layoff from the game, she has a new perspective on what matters most. These days you’ll see her arrive for a match in an outfit that looks like it was meant for the fashion runway. That’s because tennis might be her game, but she’s open to expanding her passion palette.

Lead Story: “Lock-in on Your North Star!”

As a member of the board of trustees at St. Lawrence University, a member of The Family Line, Keith Henry, had the pleasure of speaking to students from the Class of 2026. He shared his personal mission “To bring people together and create new levels of community, connectedness and compassion in life.” He broke that message down even further to highlight:

• Community: Common unity, it’s about shared experiences.
• Connectedness: Unified and connected to something bigger than self.
• Compassion: Having concern for yourself as well as others. 

He reminded them that each person moves through life in different seasons, with unique expectations, ambitions, and responsibilities. That’s why it’s essential to pause and reflect on a regular basis. What might have felt right three weeks ago may not be right next month. Above all, be authentic and true to yourself, which gives you clarity to create real possibilities anytime, anywhere, under any circumstances.

That might have been a message for students, but on a separate note he had some nuggets for his fellow Knicks fans. There’s a lot of excitement in the city about the New York Knicks playing in the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. The idea of a #NorthStar is on full display with Knicks captain, Jalen Brunson who plays at a level bigger than himself. 

He’s completely present, 100% locked in.  It’s some of the most relentless focus and concentration we’ve ever seen in any athlete, in any sport. His game revolves around “giving back and paying it forward” so his teammates can succeed. In Henry’s words, “That’s the essence of a #NorthStar. It’s a guiding purpose, the steady light that keeps us grounded. It’s power and magic that comes from being on point.”

Tap-in the Afterglow: Friends and Family Who’re Good to Go!”

The graduates have received their diplomas and are off to the next step in their journey. Where they’re going and what they’ll be doing is up for grabs, if they want to get it. They will be rising to a new stage in life’s repeating cycle of growth and change. For those who helped to prepare them, it can be a bitter-sweet feeling seeing the students sail off to the sunset and to a new day at the same time.

 Among that group is my dear wife Courtney Joyce Washington, who was selected as Principal of the Year for Cedar Hill ISD in her FIRST year of employment there.  She leads with her heart and gives 100% every day to the students, staff, and community. We know firsthand the long hours, and dedication educators give to their craft. So, it’s no surprise others quickly recognized what a jewel she is.

Many might wonder how she does it or what makes her tick? Well, those who get to experience her in-person know of her love as an educator and committed sense of service. At times there might even be a calming presence she brings to difficult moments, as she often reminds herself, “don’t sweat it, God is in control.”  In the end, she knows how to have a good time while also doing good work.

Good Stuff: “Colleagues on the Job, Friends for Life!”

It started out as two boys having big dreams. They weren’t sure how things would play out, considering there would be a steep climb involved. What seemed like just two friends who met up in High School in Jamaica, became “colleagues on the job, friends for life.” They migrated to the US for college, with one pursuing study in medicine and the other in accounting. But with self-reflection they took a different path.

They wanted to fly and moved to Melbourne, Florida to start that journey. They went separate ways on their career journeys but would keep each other on track with the dream of eventually flying for American Airlines. They’ve been motivation for each other and maybe even a mirror for how they’d achieve their dreams. The story has a bigger message that might hit home for graduates as well as those looking to reinvent themselves on a new path. Sometimes the journey isn’t always a straight line. Public Good Sense: Rebirth in Voice of a People and Soul of a Nation

One of the first orders of business, not long after a child is born, is applying for a Social Security Card. That number will be assigned for life and is important for the work world. The card number uniquely identifies the holder to the system. This way their earnings can be tracked, taxed and managed in the marketplace. The social security number goes with us even if we’re not holding the physical card.

There’s a similar concept for mobile devices. Every cellphone has a SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module), as a physical or electronic ‘smart chip’. This uniquely identifies the device in the cell network and allows you to do calls, texts and uploads/downloads. The book ‘Public Good Sense’ takes a page from that idea in how it connects the dots across history, civics and culture in the civic space.

Life & Times Flava (Chill Sauce for the Grind): “The Game is Hot, The Weather’s Getting There Too!”

NY Knicks fans have something to cheer for. Their team made it to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years. Fans have been hanging out at watch parties, and some are even traveling to the Spurs arena when the Knicks are on the road. It’s high time for Knicks fans and sporting events. While that’s happening on the basketball court, 48 countries are set to compete for the Soccer World Cup.

It’s like the game is hot and the weather is getting there. With summer solstice set to roll in marking the first official day of summer, we can expect the longest daylight hours of the year. That’s because the sun is at its highest point relative to the earth’s orbit. These days we’re basically celebrating high point accomplishments of graduates and teams in different championship events.

In the same way that sports can reflect success in business, education can reflect success in family and country. Most people can relate to teaching moments in sports as well as with education not just in a classroom setting but in life. This isn’t so much about having degrees and athleticism, but about learning what wasn’t taught based on one’s awareness of self, the immediate surroundings and society.

What’s even more revealing in sports is what commentators call ‘game sense’. There’re athletes who seem to know when, where and how to make that special play. Similarly, it helps to have ‘spirit sense’ when it comes to the issues of our time whether in family or country. Education is important for making headway in your career. However, it takes awareness not to simply grow like a tree but also be good fruit.

If you’ve been watching American Idol, you know that the singing has been off the charts. Sometimes, it feels magical, maybe even sending chills for the judges. The competition prepares the performers to take their singing chops to the next level. After the season is all done, some will go on to become mainstream artists, others might find a new lane in the music industry.

This month, with spring in full swing and graduation season about to ramp-up, we took some time to share content on how folks rise and shine in career or elsewhere with the Celebrity Row and Lead Story columns. Whether in sports or life, things go through seasons. In some sports it’s almost half a year or more of preparation, education and execution on the playing field or the field of dreams. There’re are droughts or losing streaks that might come into play. But those that come out on the other side find themselves with a new level in perspective. That’s what we hope to deliver this month and beyond.

Celebrity Row: Here for the Culture – “A Different Shot in Another Game”

As the NBA playoffs go through the rounds, things are getting really chippy, as players complain about referee bias. Take for example the Celtics who got knocked out in the first round by the Sixers.  Boston’s Jalen Brown wasn’t too happy about how the series went and sounded off about officiating. The league wasn’t having it, so they slapped him a fine. In other series matchups, the concern hasn’t let-up.

Maybe Rick Fox can remember from his days playing for the Lakers and the Celtics, how the playoff is a whole new level of competition. While he might not have been seen as a franchise player, he sure was a key role player. Well, these days he’s got his eyes on another role as he announced that he’s running for office in the Bahamas where he was raised.

He says he’s running to be a man of the people, sharing and elevating the vision of the people. He’s rallying the constituents to move with clarity, courage and integrity.  He wants to level-up the Bahamas in new areas on the world stage. He declared that “We should also honor the fathers and mothers of our nation. Their legacy brought us to this moment. Our responsibility now is to move The Bahamas forward.”

While Fox was born in Canada, the Bahamas is where roots were planted and shoots were grown. As reported by CBS Sports, he migrated to the US and went to high school in Inidiana. His college career at University of North Carolina opened the door on him becoming a recognized name in sports. Now he’s taking a different shot in another game where for him, it’s gotta be more than politics.

Lead Story: “Yes, You’re Seeing Doubles, And It’s a Good Thing!”

A dream deferred isn’t necessarily denied! That might be how a mother feels about her twin son’s becoming Doctors. They are now both working together at the same NY Hospital, doing surgery and other medical procedures. This is one of those times when people find themselves seeing doubles, and it’s a good thing. Meet cardiologist Dr. Andre Cheng (in blue) and his twin, anesthesiologist Dr. Sandre Cheng.

This dream started when Andre was very sick. Their mother Claudia feared she was going to lose him and thought to herself she needed to become a doctor. She sent the boys to Hong Kong to live with their grandmother and then migrated to the US where her sights were set on becoming a pediatrician. It seemed like a longshot and long haul, where Claudia wasn’t sure she wanted to be away from her kids.

As the boys grew, they first wanted to become pilots but found a love for science. After going through college and Med School, they’re now working in their field of dreams. They often get mistaken by patients and staff as they’re identical in looks and almost carbon copies in expertise. Their personal and professional bond is like Batman and Robin, where they’re skilled in their lanes and solid together.

While mom made the sacrifice of not becoming a pediatrician, she got two for the price of one in her boys becoming doctors. It’s like the experience life teaches us where God gives us ideas where some are ours to develop, some are meant to be shared with others, and some we’ll give back to God to determine the final say on the matter. Mom Claudia might have come to that realization and acceptance as well.

As the Major League Baseball season settles in, teams are already dealing with setbacks and personnel shifts. In Philly a new Head Coach is in charge and the team seems to be on a turnaround. The Chicago Cubs are on a roll with a home and away winning streak that’s a long way from their down-in-the-dump days. Those teams and fans are experiencing a new sense of enthusiasm and excitement.

But they might sure remember when they were dealing with the rocky side of Homeplate. Those were the days when home runs were few, and wins were hard to come by. That feeling might be true for baseball players when teams go through a spell, or families go through rocky seasons. Whether due to grief, setbacks, deferred dreams or other missing life ingredients, there’s a period of doubt and distrust.

One expert in the link below gives lessons about family legacy that’s worth its weight in gold. For teams to move forward, there’s usually the need for a shift in team dynamics. How that plays out depends on leadership and kinship. Similarly, there might even be a lesson there for friendship and family dynamics. At the end of the day, knowing the ‘why’ of things will point the way for how to endure anyhow.

Good Stuff: “Games Upon Games, Records Upon Records!”

The annual pilgrimage to the NFL Draft recently landed in the blue-collar industrial town of Pittsburgh. Fans came from far and wide to cheer on their team and see their favorite players get picked. In pro sports, Draft Day is the ultimate feeling for rising from college to the next level. The equivalent of that is Signing Day at the high school level. This year’s NFL Draft had the usual sure-picks and surprises.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell eased into the evening with an interview on ESPN where he talked about Flag Football. He believes Flag has caught on because it’s accessible, less expensive and popular among female athletes. It will even be in the 2028 LA Olympics, as it’s a fast-growing sport for men and women in the next generation, like Jasmine and Chloe (2^nd pic, 2^nd from left) from the “Jackson 5’ crew.

These fierce females bring their A-game to the field. Earlier in the year, Chloe’s squad became champs in their league. The Commissioner is proud of what Flag represents for players and fans, both on and off the field. Meanwhile, the league’s new recruits bring their experience of games upon games, and the NFL keeps breaking records upon records, with over 100K fans who attended the Draft in Pittsburgh.

Congrats to cuz Styles, who became the Atlanta IBJJF Open Jiu-Jitsu Champion for the 4th time. Don’t try to pull a fast one on him on the mat or in life as he’s a discipled and skilled young man!

The runners were too hot to trot at the recent Penn Relays. The vibe has grown so much over the years that even non-Jamaicans are repping for Jamaican squads. They show up and show-out in their colors.

WORLD RECORD! Jamaica just became the first mixed 4x100m team to run under 40 seconds, clocking 39.99s to win the final heat at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana. Something about them yams!

Sending belated birthday greeting to cuz Gerry who turned 7? years old. She was treated to a special show with her daughter-in-law and friends as well as dining at one of Port Royal’s famous fish spots.

Here is Aunt Sheila in California at the Reagan Presidential Library. Plans were to fly there to celebrate her friend’s 90^th birthday. But things changed last-minute and became a 7-hr road trip. That didn’t dampen the party though.

Belated happy Mother’s Day to those who do their best work giving, loving and believing in us. A special flashback pic of my departed mother whose career as a stenographer was a preview of my skillset as a communicator. Wanna do a family project like the Smith family? Well, they got together and turned an old school bus into a mobile home. They came up with a vision and made it plain by stripping down the bus to the shell. Ever built or climbed a tree house? Well, this man had a vision for doing just that. Now it has become a resort in upstate New York. The venue isn’t your typical vacation hideaway, but it does offer some modern amenities.

Lastly, let’s shoutout Anusca (in light blue) on her recent decision to become a Muslim. Friends and family were there for the ceremony known as The Shahada, which is the Islamic declaration of faith. It is usually accompanied by a personal reflection or prayer.

Life & Times Flava (Chill Sauce for the Grind): “Going from Impossible to Possible!”

The big wigs and power players were out in force. It was the annual trip to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby. Considered the first race in the triple crown series, some of the finest breed stallions got the chance to strut their stuff. The event is like a gala for horse race enthusiasts. Maybe the top-tier horses and jockeys get the chance to be serenaded and applauded.

In this year’s showing, something spectacular happened. The winning horse Golden Tempo pulled off a rare feat by going from last to first as the race unfolded. We’ve seen this before in sports, where Tom Brady was drafted last during his early days, but became first-rate as a six-time Superbowl champion. We’ve seen something similar recently in the NBA playoffs where teams in the hole later won the round.

What can we take away from these examples? Well at a minimum, the only way that can happen is first by having the mindset of going from impossible to possible. The jockey for Golden Tempo could easily have been written off as not having a chance at the late stage of the race. But he must have come to realize that winning was still possible. That’s a personal lesson with the release of my latest book.

In the beginning it feels like being in last place. But even before the marketing wheels got going, the belief in publishing the book grew from impossible to possible. So now, all the energy and passion that went into writing the book is shifting towards going from last to the highest possible point of returns (see links below). There’s a next level awaiting us all. We must just lock in on the goal and dig-in on the task.
